Home School Disadvantages

More and more parents today are home schooling their children for various reasons. Other parents decide that after researching home schooling, they find too many disadvantages and decide to keep their children in public or private schools.

One of the major disadvantages parents worry about is their children’s lack of socialization. If there are several children in the family or if the children have an active youth group in their church, socialization might not be a huge problem. If there are not a lot of other children for their kids to play or socialize with, then this could be a problem. Socialization is very important to children. During the childhood years, they begin early in life to interact with other children. If this opportunity is denied them they might have problems later on as they grow up. This is a realistic worry that affects the decision whether or not to home school.

Another factor is organized sports. If sports are important to children, they will join city teams when they are young and can play most any sport they like. As they get older, some teenagers are so advanced and so interested in sports that they want to compete on the middle school or high school level. Also, to be noticed and have the qualified coaches, athletes need the high school experience, High school sports are often the needed start to getting college scholarships to play ball on that level. If organized sports are important to parents and children, this can be a big disadvantage.

Another disadvantage to home schooling is that the person in charge of the home school must be organized, committed, and have a certain level of education also. Also, the leader, who is usually the stay at home mother, must be a pretty strict disciplinarian or the home schooling experience simply will not work. If children are allowed to set the rules and work only when they want to work, the home school will be a disaster.

As children get older, they want to be with their peers and may become resentful at having to stay home away from their friends. They may envy their friends because they can go to proms, pep rallies, football games, and clubs. They may see themselves as having lost out on the high school experience which is usually a big part of a child's development.

For many people the high school experience is the best time in their lives. They wouldn’t trade those years for anything. The home schooled student will never experience high school. Many parents worry that their children will later in life resent them for making the decision to home school them.

Home schooling is a huge decision and one that should be well thought out and researched. Even though the parents must have the last word, as the children grow older, their needs should be a part of the decision making process.
